The Fatih Mosque ( Turkish Fatih Camii ; German  “Conqueror Mosque” ) is, along with other Islamic prayer houses, the only architectural mosque in Essen . The prayer room and the club rooms of the Turkish community from Katernberg are located here .

In 1995 the makeshift house of prayer on Katernberger Strasse fell victim to an arson attack. The Turkish community, represented by the association “Turkish Mosque Essen-Katernberg eV” (umbrella organization DITIB ), worked together with representatives of the city of Essen, the parishes and committed citizens to develop a new mosque project. The motto “ignite understanding” promoted mutual acceptance. After an initially unsuccessful search for a building plot, the VEBA site on Schalker Strasse was acquired in 1997.

The mosque is traditionally designed with a minaret (30 m high, with a diameter of only 1.70 m) and dome (15 m) and offers space for several hundred believers in the prayer room and on the gallery. The foundation stone was laid on November 2, 1997. The prayer room was lavishly designed with mosaic tiles, Arabic inscriptions and a ceiling-high chandelier. The floor is structured with red tiles in the form of small prayer rugs. The construction was financed exclusively through the commitment of his community. In the basement of the mosque there is a youth club room, next door in the parish hall is the office, a café and a large event hall.

The joint initiative of the mosque association with its neighborhood was honored in 2000 with an award as part of the national “Socially Integrative City” competition.

In the Fatih Mosque the Essen Declaration of the Muslims of September 11, 2005 was signed by representatives of all Muslim communities and associations from Essen. The declaration clearly speaks out against violence, terror, discrimination, marginalization, discord and xenophobia and in favor of supporting democratic structures and cooperation with security authorities when peaceful coexistence is endangered.
