Water: Works, Towers and Turbines is the 28th themed route on the Route of Industrial Culture .

This themed route was published by the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR) in mid-January 2016 . It is part of the ongoing expansion of the themed routes since the beginning of 2014, of which the 29th route (" Bochum - industrial culture in the heart of the district ") has already been published and the two routes 27 ( iron & steel ) and 30 ( Gelsenkirchen ) are still pending.

The water management and its history in the Ruhr area is the subject of this route with currently 92 structures and facilities on the watercourses Ruhr , Emscher , Lippe and Rhine including some stations outside the Ruhr area, especially dams in the Sauerland . It lists witnesses to large-scale water management solutions as well as the historical landscape in the Emscheraum or leisure and recreational facilities on and in the water.

The route includes old and still in operation waterworks and hydropower plants, water suppliers such as RWW and former craft businesses such as the pipe fitter's shop in Schwerte. Water towers and other containers for the supply of industry, railways and the population are listed as well as cooling towers at former industrial sites, sewage treatment plants and pumping stations to keep the polder area , which has been created by subsidence, dry. It also contains dams, watercourses and landscapes that were renatured as part of the Emscher conversion , historical leisure sites that were created in connection with water, brine and hygiene and museums on the subject.
