Water tower Frillendorf
The water tower Frillendorf is a water tower built in 1925 in the Essen district of Frillendorf . In 1985 it was placed under monument protection.
History and description
Frille village inhabitants was for centuries at about 90 people before the 19th century in the Ruhr area , the industrialization began. In 1847 the first shaft of the Queen Elisabeth colliery was sunk; two more shafts followed in 1897 and 1912. The number of inhabitants grew accordingly, as numerous dwellings were created for immigrant miners. Mining caused the water table to drop so much that the wells that had supplied the households fell dry.
In 1897, for example, a water supply contract was signed between the communities of Stoppenberg , Frillendorf, Schonnebeck and Huttrop with the then independent town of Steele . In 1907 the first iron elevated water tank was built on Ernestinenstrasse, what was then the Höhenstrasse. He camped on a two-story, stone round tower. However, this soon turned out to be too low and had to be supplemented by a new water tower. In 1973 the first tower was laid down. Today there is a residential complex with condominiums on the site.
The architect Arndts built the new water tower in 1925 "under the influence of Edmund Körner ". The tower serves as an expansion tank for the water pressure and to cover the water demand at peak times.
The roughly cylindrical tower with a facade in brickwork is attributed to the brick expressionism of the 1920s and has, for structural reasons, radial, acute-angled stiffening ribs inside. The facade design with triangular "buttresses" emphasizes and exaggerates this shape. Individual dark stones and ornaments in front of the upper end in the facade adorn the tower. The water tank, integrated staircase wing and load-bearing structure form a unit.
The tower is about 13 meters high; the water tank has a capacity of 2000 m³. It was last renovated in 2006 and is still in use.
