The Alte Emscher pumping station is a sewage pumping station of the Emschergenossenschaft in Duisburg - Beeck planned from 1911, built between 1912 and 1913 and commissioned in 1914 .

The pumping station in the catchment area of the Alte Emscher became necessary because of progressive subsidence , which made normal drainage by natural flooding impossible. It is the oldest pumping station in the Emschergenossenschaft and is located at the lowest point of the sink funnel. The free-span reinforced concrete dome structure , at the time the second largest of its kind in Germany, has a dome with a diameter of 41 meters and a height of 24.5 meters. The high altitude was necessary for thermal reasons due to the operation of the original diesel pumps .

The round shape of the pumping station goes back to the designs of the hydraulic engineers of the Emschergenossenschaft. The Düsseldorf construction company Dücker & Cie. Together with her chief engineer Ernst Mautner, they designed a ribbed concrete dome with a diameter of 41 m. The building on this basis by the architect was designed Alfred Fischer , who 13 years later for Duisburg and the pumping station Schmidt Horst and two years later the pumping station Schwelgern designed. The circular shape of the building serves the optimal function and is able to withstand the water pressure even if the Rhine dike breaks ; even then the sink can still be drained.

Most of the diesel pumps have now been replaced by electric pumps. To support the pumping station during floods , two additional pumping stations were added in 1932 and 1947. In 2006 a new pumping station was inaugurated on the site. Since then, the Alte Emscher (A) pumping station has only served as a reserve pumping station.

The Alte Emscher is cut off from the Emscher river system and only drains its immediate catchment area in the north of Duisburg and the west of Oberhausen. The Alte Emscher pumping station pumps the water through pressure pipes to the Duisburg Alte Emscher sewage treatment plant . After cleaning there, the water is pumped over the dike into the Rhine. In addition, the Alte Emscher pumping station forwards water that is pumped out of the Stockum Alten Emscher subsidence area by the Duisburg-Stockum pumping station in Stockum.

The Alte Emscher pumping station is part of several themed routes on the Route of Industrial Culture . It has been a listed building since 1999 . On May 24, 2013, it was recognized by the Federal Chamber of Engineers as a historical landmark of civil engineering in Germany .
