The Läppkes Mühlenbach is a tributary of the Emscher near the city limits between Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr and then between Essen and Oberhausen . The watercourse, which was heavily canalized until 1989 and used as a superficial sewer, has been renatured as a pilot project since 1991 by the Emschergenossenschaft between kilometers 1.1 and 2.9 .
Location and description
Only a few meters behind the source in Mülheim an der Ruhr- Dümpten , the Läppkes Mühlenbach receives an inflow from the 3.381 kilometer long Hexbach , which rises around 1.5 kilometers to the east in Dümpten and which feeds it with at least 23 liters of water per second. The Hexbach is also known as the upper reaches of the Läppkes Mühlenbach due to its inflow close to the source and its much greater length. The total length of both watercourses is then given as 6.218 kilometers.
The Läppkes Mühlenbach flows past the Breukelmann Hof in the jointly renatured creek bed and receives an inflow from the 2.497 kilometer long Heilgraben. It passes under the federal road 231 , the state road 229, the railway line Oberhausen-Osterfeld-Hamm and the track park Frintrop . In canalized form, it then crosses under the Rhein-Herne Canal at Haus Ripshorst in Oberhausen and a few meters afterwards it flows into the Emscher, which runs parallel to the canal.
history
In the Läppkes Mühlenbach, at the beginning of the 20th century, wastewater was diverted to the spring and rainwater in the non-canalised stream, which flowed into the Emscher with a slight gradient in meanders. After the dike on the Rhine-Herne Canal broke in 1917, the Läppkes Mühlenbach was straightened in the 1920s to discharge waste water from the municipality, mining and industry ( Köttelbecke ), partly diked and put in a concrete tub to allow it to drain into the Emscher guarantee. This disposal of wastewater, which is common in the Ruhr area because of the subsidence, is no longer accepted for hygienic and aesthetic reasons; attempts are being made to renature the affected waters.
As one of the first projects of this kind, the Läppkes Mühlenbach was redesigned into a natural shape by the Emschergenossenschaft between 1989 and 1991. To this end, an underground sewer was built over a length of 1.7 kilometers parallel to the natural course of the stream in order to free the stream of wastewater discharges. A new park landscape was created, with bridges, paths, meadows and wetlands . A piece of the old concrete channel was left to document the previous state.
Since 1991 the Läppkes Mühlenbach has been examined annually physically, chemically and biologically in order to document the water quality and the development of the aquatic community and thus the success of the remodeling measures carried out. Up to 1998, a total of 46 species were identified in the ecologically remodeled stretch of water.
