Essen-Bredeney water tower
The water tower in Essen-Bredeney is a disused and preservation of standing water tower in the southern Essen district Bredeney .
History and description
The 31 meter high water tower was built in 1921 on the highest geographical point in Bredeney, on Walter-Sachse-Weg, and served the city's water supply.
The concreted tower was built on a hexagonal floor plan, tapers towards the top and ends with a perimeter with railings on concrete supports. Above this is a spherical, wrought-iron flood tank in the manner of the Aug. Klönne company , which has a second circumference with a railing on its largest circumference.
In August 1990, the elevated tank, not the concrete tower, was placed under monument protection. In 1997 the disused water tower went into private ownership and was rebuilt for residential purposes with office space on nine floors by 2002. One of the six reinforced concrete outer surfaces was replaced by several rectangular glass surfaces and a vertical glass staircase and elevator tower was added.
The initiative Germany - Land of Ideas honored the water tower in 2013 to highlight another idea for the city of tomorrow.
