The Wedau marshalling yard was a large marshalling yard in Duisburg - Wedau . It operated from 1890 to 2000 and was finally shut down in 2006.

history

Various developments led to the construction of the marshalling yard in Wedau. On the one hand, the Rheinische , Bergisch-Märkische and Köln-Mindener railway companies were nationalized in the years 1880 to 1886 , so that the previous parallel routes were no longer necessary. On the other hand, the freight traffic along the Rhine and in the Ruhr area increased steadily, the main train stations should be relieved of this. South of the Duisburg main station , on the Troisdorf – Mülheim-Speldorf railway line , there was still a sufficiently large and open area.

In 1890 the Wedau marshalling yard was built. In order to use the swampy area, large embankments had to be made. The gravel required came from nearby quarry ponds, which today belong to the six-lake plateau in Wedau.

The bypass route from Wedau to Oberhausen , which was opened in 1901 , made the marshalling yard of central importance. From 1912 to 1913 it was expanded into one of the largest marshalling yards of the time, after which it had two drainage mountains, 24 tracks and a track length of over four kilometers. At the same time, the Wedau repair shop and the Wedau railway depot were built right next to it . Together with the passenger station , the workshop settlement and the railway settlements in Wedau and Bissingheim, the result was a site that was strongly influenced by the railway.

Todays situation

Today the drainage mountains and other shunting systems are idle. In addition, all unused tracks were dismantled and ballast removed. The signal box 2 at the hump North stands together with the local water tower under preservation , both derived from the time of removal (1912/13). The water tower of bricks wearing a Intze vessels for an iron circulation.

Planning

The former station area is to be converted into a residential area. In this context, the expansion of the “Ratinger Westlinie” with S-Bahn connection towards Duisburg Hauptbahnhof in the north and Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof in the south is planned.
