The Heilenbecketalsperre was built in the years 1894 to 1896 in the area of today's cities Ennepetal - near the district Rüggeberg - and Breckerfeld in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and is the oldest dam in South Westphalia. The dam is operated by the Heilenbecke water association.

The Heilenbecke , which flows into the Ennepe 7.5 km below the dam at Ennepetal-Milspe, is dammed . With a maximum capacity of 450,000 m³, the water surface of the reservoir is 8.5 ha.

Originally the Heilenbecketalsperre was a water reservoir for the hammer mills and Schleifkotten that were located along the Heilenbecke. Nowadays, however, it is primarily used to supply drinking water ; next to the rise of the Ruhr at low water.

The dam is a gravity dam made of quarry stone masonry with a height of 19.5 m, a crown width of 4.1 m and a crown length of 205 m (before the renovation 2.8 m or 162 m). It was built according to the designs of Otto Intze in 1896 and renovated from 1988 to 1990, whereby it was reinforced and provided with an inspection corridor. It also received a concrete cut-off wall, wall drainage , a new wall crown and new operating facilities.

With an approximately 2.4 km long circular path, the dam is a popular area for hikers and joggers; the restaurant, which was located directly at the parking lot, was destroyed to the ground by a fire in the summer of 2006 and was not rebuilt.

The dam was placed under monument protection as a technical monument of supra-local importance, which is to be preserved and used for scientific and architectural reasons.

Improve water quality

To improve the general water quality and to reduce the costs of drinking water production, two deep water aeration systems (TIBEAN) were put into operation in June 2012 . These systems enrich the deep water with oxygen from the atmosphere without affecting the natural stratification of the lake. The hypolimnion remains aerobic all year round , the redissolution of phosphates is reduced, the mineralization of the sediments is significantly improved and the nutrient load in the water is reduced. At the same time, the deep zone of the water body is maintained or expanded as an aerobic habitat for fish and other higher organisms, and the formation of digested sludge, toxic hydrogen sulfide and the accumulation of harmful ammonium are prevented.

Both deep water aeration systems are identical in construction and were specially designed for this application. These are telescopic versions, which make it possible to set the suction depth from 11 to 13.5 m in order to ensure the safe operation of the systems when the water level fluctuates. The oxygen input into the deep water is 6.8 kg / h per system. Overall, when both systems are in operation, there is a total input of 13.6 kg of oxygen per hour into the deep water. The first system was placed in the middle of the dam basin approx. 30 m from the dam. The second system is another 50 m behind the first system in the extension of the deepest channel of the dam. The systems are initially leased to WBV Ennepetal-Milspe for 10 years.
