Niedernhof
The Niedernhof is a noble residence on the southern bank of the Ruhr near Hagen Hengstey. It is not identical to the manor house known as Villa Funcke or Funckenburg , which is an entrepreneur villa in Herdecke . This is located on the northern bank of the Hengsteysee .
The Villa Funcke was built in 1872 as a country residence by Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke II. In 1895, the Hagen entrepreneur Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke III., Owner of the Funcke & Hueck screw factory , acquired the grounds of the abandoned manor Haus Niedernhofen some 700 m further downstream. The villa was built in neo-Gothic style from natural stone and was popularly known as Funckenburg .
In order to be able to reach his factory in Hagen at any time without major detours, Funcke built a private iron pedestrian suspension bridge over the Ruhr, which spanned the river between two medieval towers. The southern bridge tower, today located on an island in the lake, has been preserved.
In 1919 the heirs of William Funckes sold the land at the Ruhr the Ruhrverband in food , which in 1926 began with the construction of the dam.
The Funckes family include Karl Ernst Osthaus , Oscar Funcke and Liselotte Funcke .
