The Hengstey run-of-river power plant is a hydropower plant at the end of the Hengsteysee in the course of the Ruhr, exactly on the city limits between Herdecke and Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia ; the power station building is on the Hagen side.

The run-of-river power plant was implemented as a combination system with a roller dam in the 1920s. After the construction, the Ruhr water was then dammed up to the Hengsteysee. Since then, the river water and the difference in altitude of around 4.6 m have provided the continuous basis for regenerative power generation .

At the Hengsteysee there is also the Koepchenwerk and further downstream the Stiftsmühle power station .

The run-of-river power plant

The power plant operated by RWE is equipped with three Kaplan turbines with a vertical shaft. It delivers a maximum of 3.3 MW base load and produces around 11 million kilowatt hours of electrical energy a year .

The weir

The weir system that dams the lake has four large cylinder-shaped locks that can be opened during high water . In addition, a lock on the Herdecker side of the weir can enable smaller vessels to overcome the weir barrier if necessary. In 2007 the Ruhrverband built a fish ladder right next to the power station building with the support of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
