Haus Harkorten is a structurally almost completely preserved, but decaying late baroque manor and the former residence of the patrician and entrepreneur family Harkort in the Westerbauer district of Hagen in the southeastern Ruhr area .

investment

The listed complex on the northern edge of the former municipality of Westerbauer is accessed by a long lime tree alley that was probably created at the same time and consists of several buildings:

  • the former mansion from the second half of the 18th century, which is accessed via a six-step flight of stairs ,
  • the "economic building" (the old main building), which was built in the late 17th century
  • and the warehouse built in 1705 , some of which was also used for residential purposes.

The "Backhaus", which dates from at least the 18th century and was demolished in 2013 and rebuilt on new foundations, was not included in the monument ensemble. The new building no longer contains any historical substance.

Haus Harkorten is considered to be a "highlight of Bergisch residential building", although it is not located in the historic Duchy of Berg . The two-storey half - timbered building on a high quarry stone base has a broken, partially curved hipped roof , with a large dwelling with a curved gable in front of the entrance and garden . Large baroque windows are distributed over the facade in six axes . The entrance with a flight of stairs is located between the middle windows. It has a portal richly decorated with rocaille carvings with a decorated skylight . The result was an axially symmetrical, square floor plan that was planned as a pure residential and office building - there were no production areas. The windows and the original glazing have largely been preserved. The living room and bedroom were on the upper floor , and the staff rooms and other storage rooms in the attic.

history

around 1877

Haus Harkorten is the birthplace of Gustav , Eduard and Friedrich Harkort , the "father of the Ruhr area". Only a few hundred meters away near the Ennepe was the Harkort factory , of which only a few parts of the building remain today. Right next to it, the Harkort coal railway ran by until the 1960s .

In the years 1756/57 Johann Caspar Harkort III. (1716–1760) build a new mansion on the older estate of the Harkort family by the Schwelmer master school in the Bergisch Rococo style. The suggestion for building the mansion came from Louisa Catharina Harkort, born in a middle-class family . Märcker (1718–1795), who was educated at the court of the Essen princess.

The last owner was a distant descendant of the builder family. According to Bettina Vaupel of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , he did not have the financial means to maintain it. House Harkorten was in acute disrepair in 2014 due to years of vacancy and a lack of building maintenance. The estate was broken up into individual property. Repair work is in progress on the heavily damaged outbuildings. The gardens and parks are overgrown, the surrounding landscape is disturbed by buildings. An investor transferred ownership of the house with the aim of gradual renovation and later use to a non-profit association that is also supported by the city of Hagen.

In 2016, the federal government's special monument protection program approved € 240,000 in order to stop the building from deteriorating further. As a first measure, the slate-clad facade including the roof will be repaired. Furthermore, a concept for future use that is compatible with listed buildings is to be developed. A temporary opening for cultural events and a museum presentation on the ground floor are planned.

The "Association for the Promotion of the Preservation and Development of Haus Harkorten eV" takes care of the future of Haus Harkorten.
