Syburger Bergbauweg

The Syburger Bergbauweg is a hiking trail related to mining history on the northwest slope of the Syberg in Dortmund .
The mining of coal from the Sengsbank seam , one of the geologically oldest mining coal seams in the Ruhr area , was first mentioned in 1582. Mathias Becker, judge in Schwerte and Westhofen, received permission from his sovereign to mine coal in open-cast mining.
In the course of time three mines and tunnel mines have been guaranteed at this point :
- Beckersches Feld mine (16th century)
- Grinding mill colliery (18th century)
- Graf Wittekind colliery (19th century)
The Syburger Bergbauweg connects the tunnels and collapse funnels (so-called Schachtpingen) of these three mines and has a length of about 2.5 km. On the partly very steep path it shows the tunnel mouth holes, former colliery houses (mostly only as locations), a hand winch, a braking distance, several coal pulling paths as well as a seam outcrop and the schoolmaster quarry .
The construction of the mining route was carried out from 1986 onwards, voluntarily by members of the Association for the Promotion of Mining Historic Sites in the Ruhr Area . In May 1992, the Syburger Bergbauweg was inaugurated by the Lord Mayor of Dortmund, Günter Samtlebe . The old tunnels of the "Schleifmühle" and "Graf Wittekind" collieries have been preserved since 1997 as the Graf Wittekind visitor mine, which is recognized and monitored by the mining authority and can be viewed on guided tours. The visitor mine is looked after by the Dortmund working group in the Förderverein Bergbauhistorischer Stätten Ruhrrevier eV The mining historical sites are entered as ground monuments in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund .
