Barracks of the Paulinenhütte

The Paulinenhütte barracks is a residential building in Dortmund , in the city district of Innenstadt-West, Paulinenstrasse 1–11. It is a classic example of workers' housing construction in the mid-19th century. The Paulinenhütte , a former ironworks with a puddle furnace , submitted the building application for the construction of the building in 1857.

16 family apartments and an additional 100 beds for single people were planned. Compared to pure single dormitories , as they were usually built in the Ruhr area for industrial workers, this mixed living concept had some advantages. The plant management assumed that the housewives and daughters of the married miners would also do the housework of the unmarried because they did not have enough time to run a household independently due to the long working hours. With the additional income, the family's maintenance could be improved at the same time.

The building with the three-storey middle section and two four-storey, tower-like corner buildings has a total of 28 window axes under a gently sloping gable roof . The complex consists of several semi-detached houses, each of which has its own staircase with a front and rear entrance. The dormitories were located on the second floor of the middle part, this part is noticeable due to the lower window height and the lack of cornices and window frames.

The barracks of the Paulinenhütte is registered as an architectural monument in the monument list of the city of Dortmund and part of the route of industrial culture .

The residential complex belonged to Veba Wohnen (later Viterra , then Deutsche Annington , today Vonovia ) until 1988 . Then the apartments in need of renovation were acquired and modernized by the Horst Bötefür building community in Dortmund. They are used as living space and can generally be rented.
