About this picture
Location of the Dortmund City Center-East district within Dortmund.

The city district Innenstadt-Ost as one of the three inner-city districts of Dortmund includes the eastern and southern outskirts of the city. The districts include Kaiserbrunnen , Ruhrallee , Körne and Westfalendamm .

Here you will mainly find urban residential areas with shopping streets of local and city-wide importance, such as the Kaiserviertel or the Saarlandstraßenviertel, both of which were built at the end of the 19th century. The judicial district with the district court and regional court is located between Hamburger Strasse and Kaiserstrasse . North of Hamburger Strasse, on Lübecker Strasse, is the Dortmund correctional facility , colloquially known as the Lübecker Hof . South of Kaiserstraße there is a former upper-class residential area with a large number of representative entrepreneurial villas from the beginning of the 20th century. Here you can find the imposing building of the former regional mining office in Dortmund , as well as the Italian consulate . The orthodox Jewish community of Dortmund with 4200 members and the associated kindergarten are also located here.

But there are also residential areas in the city district that are characterized by greenery and spacious single-family houses, such as the garden city . While the other districts are visually difficult to distinguish from one another due to their consistently inner-city character, the Körne district has been able to retain its partially independent structures to this day.

Although the smallest urban district in Dortmund in terms of area, the city center east with around 56,000 inhabitants (as of 2017) is one of the most populous urban districts. The city district has shown migration gains since 1999 (more inflows than departures) and, with 31,831 apartments (as of 1995), also has the largest housing supply.

Kaiserbrunnen

The largest park in Dortmund , the Westfalenpark , belongs to the east of the city center, as does the historically significant Ostenfriedhof , on which, in addition to the grave of the cookbook author Henriette Davidis, there are also some gravestone works and sculptures by the sculptor Benno Elkan .

The city district is served by the S4 S-Bahn line, the U41, U43, U45 and U47 light rail lines , as well as various bus lines. With the federal highway 1 one of the strongest in Germany traveled roads leads (> 140,000 vehicles per day) by this municipality. An underground tunnel is currently planned in the area between the Märkische Strasse intersection and the B 236.
