Kirchderne is the statistical district 23 and at the same time a north-eastern part of the city of Dortmund . It is located in the Scharnhorst district .
geography
The place is about six kilometers northeast of downtown Dortmund. Today the place is divided into two settlement areas by the federal highway 236 .
In the larger western settlement area there are predominantly single and two-family houses, as well as the high-rise estate between Derner Strasse and the embankment of the U42 line .
In the smaller eastern settlement area, on the other hand, there are mostly smaller apartment buildings and colliery houses.
history
Until industrialization, Kirchderne, like the neighboring town of Derne, was characterized by agriculture. After the advent of the coal and steel industry, Kirchderne lay in the shadow of the Westfalenhütte to the south and was bordered in the north by the Gneisenau colliery . A memorial in Kirchderne commemorates one of the greatest disasters in German mining. On February 11, 1925, 136 miners died in a firedamp explosion at the Minister Stein colliery .
On April 1, 1928, Kirchderne was incorporated into Dortmund.
In June 1989 Michail Gorbatschow traveled to Kirchderne to visit the Westfalenhütte .

traffic
Kirchderne is connected to the railway network via the Kirchderne station on the Westmünsterland railway (Dortmund – Enschede) and the Der Lüner railway (Dortmund – Münster). With the rail line U42 of DSW21 you reach the inner city within minutes. Railway and light rail cross in the eastern part of Kirchdernes in the Karmschen Heide, but have no connection there.
Sports
The team of the integration sports club Viktoria Dortmund-Kirchderne is a founding member of the blind soccer Bundesliga and vice-European cup winner 2007 in goal ball .
