The Knepper coal-fired power plant in a rural setting

Brüninghausen is a district in the north of Dortmund and belongs to the Mengede district . The district is not to be confused with Brünninghausen in the south of Dortmund.
The present-day Dortmund district of Brüninghausen, which also includes the district of Nierhausen, was first mentioned in 1464. Even the Cöln-Minden Railway , which was built in 1848 and divides the town in half , could not change the agricultural character of Brüninghausen.
On April 1, 1928, Brüninghausen was incorporated into Dortmund.
Only with the construction of the Gustav mine in 1934 did the industrial age come here as well. After the colliery closed in 1967, the Gustav Knepper power plant built on the same site in 1944 remained in operation until 2014.
On the city limits of Castrop-Rauxel , mountain subsidence after 1960 created a wetland that is now a nature reserve.
