Scharnhorst-Ost is a district in the north-east of Dortmund in the Scharnhorst district . The place consists of the large housing estate of the same name and the Scharnhorst school center.
history
In 1965, construction of a new large housing estate began on the site east of Flughafenstrasse to alleviate the acute housing shortage. 5250 apartments, also and above all for large families, were built by nine housing associations under the leadership of Neue Heimat . In contrast to Alt-Scharnhorst , which was originally built on the municipal area of Wambel and Brackel (today's district is Kirchderne), Scharnhorst-Ost is located on the former municipality of Grevel .

Infrastructure
After only a provisional infrastructure existed in the first few years, Scharnhorst-Ost now has good transport connections and a wide range of shopping opportunities.
With the stops Droote, Scharnhorst-Zentrum and Flughafenstraße, 3 of 28 stops on the U42 from Grevel to Hombruch are in Scharnhorst-Ost.
The Droote shopping street and the Scharnhorst shopping center, known as "EKS" for short, are home to almost all shops for daily needs.
Social difficulties
Since Scharnhorst-Ost was increasingly becoming the focus of social problems, it was included in the “ Districts with Special Need for Renewal ” program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the mid-1990s (until 2005). Reports of young people rioting have been circulating in the media to this day.
Like Alt-Scharnhorst, Scharnhorst-Ost is one of the 13 socially disadvantaged districts.
