Churches, mosques, synagogues and a Hindu temple can be found on the 26th themed route of sacred buildings . The Ruhr Regional Association published the route at the beginning of May 2013, thus adding a completely new route to the route of industrial culture after a few years .

The 70 or so sacred buildings , some of which have been deconsecrated and converted, were selected because they are typical of the Ruhr area . Church buildings from the Middle Ages were not included because they were built before what was later known as the Ruhr area. The route is intended to bring the diversity and history of denominations and religions in the Ruhr area closer.
