history
First church building
The neo-Gothic St. Antonius Church was built between 1879 and 1881 at the current location, on the former property of the farmer Johann Pollerberg. Because of the Kulturkampf , it was initially considered a private home. From 1882, after various negotiations, it could be used as a side church of the Essen Minster Parish St. Johann Baptist . Two years later, on October 16, 1894, the St. Antonius Church was consecrated. On April 3, 1888, a rector was appointed for them. Under the Archbishop of Cologne, Philip III. Cardinal Krementz , the parish Frohnhausen was formed on May 9, 1892. This happened with separation from the parish of St. Johann Baptist. With the incorporation of Frohnhausen into Essen on August 1, 1901, the new parish of Frohnhausen became a parish of the city of Essen.
The old St. Antonius Church received a triple bronze ring from the Otto bell foundry near Bremen . The bells were cast there in 1884 and 1891. Their tone sequence was f 1 –as 1 –b 1 . Today the bells hang in the St. Elisabeth Church, Frohnhauser Straße. It is the oldest OTTO bell that is still completely intact today.
In 1944, during an air raid during World War II , the old St. Antonius Church was destroyed except for the tower.
After the Second World War
Only the bell tower of the neo-Gothic church had survived the war bombing raids badly. It was demolished in 1972 because it was in disrepair, with the St. Elisabeth Church in Frohnhausen receiving the old bells.
The construction of an emergency church began as early as 1948, which could then be used in 1950. This building is now the parish hall.
On October 31, 1959, the new St. Antonius Church was consecrated by Bishop Franz Hengsbach .
Architecture of today's church
After an architecture competition in 1956, the Cologne architect Rudolf Schwarz was commissioned to build a new church. Schwarz had the new church built as a sleek and modern cube with a reinforced concrete skeleton structure, the square compartments with an edge length of 1.5 meters are lined with red bricks. The floor plan forms a square with an edge length of 33 meters. The first quarter of the total building height of 16 meters is windowless. From a quarter of the height of the building, the church structure protrudes upwards in a T-shape, creating a main room with a nave and transept. In this way, the congregation can gather around the central altar area from three sides, the middle and both sides of the transept. There is no choir of its own. The walls of the upper T-shaped part of the building were given square windows with glass paintings from Georg Meistermann's school . The interior of the church was done by Maria Schwarz , the architect's wife. On December 12, 1985, the St. Antonius Church was added to the list of monuments of the city of Essen. The reason given is that the church building is a document for the late period of Classical Modernism and is therefore of importance for architectural history.
Equipment of today's church
The entire equipment of the St. Anthony Church has been changed several times since its existence, also because of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council . This includes the relocation of the tabernacle from the altar to the right area of the sanctuary. The church also received a copper altar cross. In the early 1980s there was also the textile work We go to the cross (which, however, is currently not hung), a figure of Anthony and the Way of the Cross; all elements were designed by regional artists. The ambo was also increased.
In the course of the abandonment of the former branch churches, some pieces of equipment were taken over to St. Antonius in 2009/2010. These are the statue of the Virgin Mary from St. Augustine and the former tabernacle from St. Mary's Birth with early works by Egino Weinert as a shrine of the word as well as the eternal light traffic light from there, which has been used in this form since 1937 to furnish the first one that was destroyed in 1943 Church of the Birth of Mary (the ring is still original, the rest is a replica from the 1970s).
Since the steeple of the old church was originally still in use, the new building does not have its own bell room. Since the church tower was demolished, the cans have been "rung". Originally from tape, then from CD and now using "electronic bells".
organ
After the start of planning in 1961, the organ was built as Opus 4255 by the organ building company EF Walcker & Cie. In autumn 1962 . in Ludwigsburg in the church. It was consecrated on the third Advent in 1962.
The location of the organ is only slightly raised in the nave in front of the east work without a gallery.
Disposition
The disposition of the organ was carried out by Ernst Kaller from the Folkwang School . The organ has three manuals and a pedal for a total of 30 registers on the free-standing console . The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electrical.

local community
The parish of St. Antonius in Essen-Frohnhausen, Essen-Holsterhausen and Essen-Fulerum has existed in its current composition since October 2003. At that time, the three previously independent parishes of St. Antonius, St. Mariae Birth (Frohnhauser Straße) and St. Augustinus ( Wickenburg) and a new parish St. Antonius was founded.
With the restructuring of the parishes in the diocese of Essen , St. Antonius parish church became the new large parish of St. Antonius on April 1, 2008. In addition to the parish of St. Antonius, it now also includes the parishes and churches of St. Mary's Conception ( Holsterhausen ), St. Mary's Assumption ( Altendorf ), The Holy Family on Margarethenhöhe , St. Elisabeth in Frohnhausen and the Polish-speaking community St. Clemens Maria Hofbauer. This makes the large parish of St. Antonius with 33,000 Catholics the largest of the ten large parishes in Essen. Auxiliary Bishop Franz Grave celebrated the founding service on April 18, 2008 in St. Antonius Church.
Other churches in the parish
The churches of St. Augustine and St. Mary's Birth were subsidiary churches of St. Antonius from 2003 to 2008 and were named as so-called further churches before 2008 , which no longer received funding from the diocese. The Church of St. Mary's Birth was sold and is now a Christian-oriented event location as a lighthouse sponsored by the Evangelical-Free Church Social Work in Essen eV The Church of St. Augustine was first used by an African religious community and a Russian Orthodox community, but is now also used for sale.
