The Protestant Immanuel Church is a listed church building at Bärenbruch 17, in Marten , a district of Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The cross-shaped central building was built from 1906 to 1908 according to plans by Arno Eugen Fritsche , the new building was inaugurated on March 18, 1908. Due to the shape of the building plot, the church is not faced , the entrance is in the south, the altar is in the north, the whole building is rotated about 30 ° from the north-south axis clockwise. The two large Art Nouveau windows are on the east and west side of the church. The high tower, with a slightly curved pointed helmet, stands at an angle between the facade and the cross arm. The walls in romanized forms, made of rough Westerwald granite, are closed. The additions make the building look like a castle. There is a group of windows above the monumentally framed entrance niche. The cross arms are divided by large, semicircular windows. The main room is defined by the glass pendent dome in the middle . A barrel vault was drawn into the chancel, the side arms are equipped with ridge vaults. The surrounding gallery summarizes the space and thus corresponds to the centralizing disposition, according to the Wiesbaden program for the Protestant church building from 1891. The space is oriented towards the altar and the pulpit . The fully preserved, partially restored , historical furnishings , strongly influenced by Art Nouveau , are remarkable. The wall and vaulted surfaces are painted ornamentally in light colors. The system of the altar and the raised singing stage with pulpit and organ is covered by a triumphal arch. The church was extensively restored from 1982 to 1989.

The building has only been named Immanuel Church since the 1980s. At that time it took over the name from its East Berlin partner church.

Organs

Play table Benediktorgel

Together with the church, a pneumatic organ (Opus 1398) made by Eberhard Friedrich Walcker with 32  registers (3 transmissions ) on 2 manuals (main unit / swell unit ) and pedal was installed in 1908 . This is located at the front and with its prospect, which frames one of the large Art Nouveau windows, forms the rear wall of the singing gallery and the stage-like arrangement of the altar, pulpit and pulpit cross. Unfortunately, due to the "modern" steam heating, the organ was already so in need of repair in the mid-1960s that the community decided to sell the entire pipe inventory (except for those in the prospectus ) and the lead conductors as scrap metal and thus the entire instrument with an electronic one To replace model from Ahlborn .

After the interior was restored to its original state through the reconstruction of the historical paintings, the empty cash register after the restoration no longer allowed the community to build a new pipe organ . So it was decided to take an unusual step for the time: The Benedikt company designed a digital organ with 103 registers especially for this room , divided into 8 separate works , and installed it in 1997. The only visible part of the organ is the game table 3 manuals and Pedal (6 Pistons for the normal coupling , 2 Expression pedals for 2nd and 3rd Manual), tutti and sequencer up / latrines an 8 x 8 = 64 times combination system with external storage option. The amplifier system as well as the 20 loudspeakers built for this instrument are, together with the 6 loudspeakers from the old Ahlborn organ integrated into the new instrument, behind the historical prospectus on the still existing windchest . Since 2009 the Benedict organ (connected via MIDI) has been supplemented by a computer on which the Hauptwerk software program runs and on which, among other things, the sample set of the Dorstfeld Sauer organ is installed. Thus, despite the implementation in Gronau , this instrument can still be heard, even if only "acoustically virtual", in the Elias community.
