Building history

Originally, the Catholic residents of the village of Eickel and the farmers in the area belonged to the parish of St. Gertrudis in Wattenscheid . From this, new parishes were formed to provide the growing population with church services. From the parishes of St. Marien and St. Laurentius , the parish of St. Joseph in Wanne-Süd was founded on November 1, 1907, and has been celebrating church services in two halls that have served as an emergency church since 1894.

Soon afterwards the community acquired a piece of land, donated by farmer Heinrich Lechtape and building contractor August Franke. On January 22, 1909, the permission to build the church was granted, on September 7, 1909 the groundbreaking took place and on April 17, 1910 the foundation stone was laid. On November 17, 1912, the church was solemnly consecrated by the Bishop of Paderborn Karl Joseph Schulte and dedicated to the patronage of St. Joseph .

During the Second World War , the church was badly damaged on July 10, 1943, and especially on September 29, 1943, and closed for services. On November 6, 1944, the dome roof structure was destroyed and on the night of April 10, 1945, the detonation of six duds caused by the Volkssturm major damage to the tower and the vaults.

In 1947–1948 the structural security of the church was restored with simple painting and glazing. Further repairs were carried out in 1957, 1961, 1964, 1971, 1984 and 2014.

Since February 13, 1992 the church has been registered as an architectural monument under No. 294 in the list of architectural monuments of the city of Herne .

Church building

According to the plans of the architect Karl Pinnekamp (born October 17, 1872 Gelsenkirchen , † May 23, 1955 Essen-Rellinghausen), the monumental building made of Ruhr sandstone was built between 1910 and 1911. Due to its location between three streets, the church was planned with three sides. The building, with a parsonage planned and executed at the same time, is to be settled in the late phase of historicism , which strives for monumentality and already shows a reduction in formal language.

The east-facing three-aisled basilica with a transept is built on an area of 46.69 m × 22.66 m. A square, flat-roofed, three-bay central nave (11 m × 12.28 m) is flanked by two 3.75 m wide, cross-vaulted side aisles divided into three equally large bays by transverse and longitudinal straps. The flat-roofed transept (11 m × 24.4 m) contains the separated crossing with an eight-part monastery vault (11 m × 11 m). In the aisles there are small cones in the west . The main choir (11 m × 7 m) with retracted semicircular apse was originally accompanied by two side choirs, which were separated in the 1973 years for other uses and are no longer recognizable.

Exterior construction

The church has two portals in the tower on the west side and a side entrance on the north side of the nave.

The lions at St. Joseph's Church

The neo-Romanesque church is faced with different sized Ruhr sandstone bosses. On the west side of the main street is the massive, four-story tower on a transverse rectangular floor plan. Here, based on the example of the San Zeno Maggiore building in Verona, a vestibule is placed in front of it, which is guarded by three lion sculptures, based on its Italian model, on sandstone plinths and carved from Ibbenbüren sandstone. They carry three round columns with three-dimensionally decorated chalice block capitals on which the two pointed gables of the double portal rest. The two canopy portals with coffered arches are made of sandstone like the drapery and two archivolts emerge from each of the capitals . The tympanum field is filled with reconstructed plant ornamentation. The other portals are also designed similarly.

Furnishing

  • The choir stalls came from the sculptor and cabinet maker August Bücker in Rheda and dates from 1927.
  • The high altar from 2006 is a reconstructing new version of the first high altar from 1913, which was destroyed in 1965, using the original crucifixion group .
  • Cross by Heinrich Erlenkötter (1922–1979) from Wiedenbrück .
  • The glass windows are designs by the Herne artist Jupp Gesing and were created in 1972.
  • 1972 Ambo , altar table , baptismal font and other liturgical objects by Herbert Lorenz .

Bells

The first ring, three bronze bells (Petrus, Paulis, Maria; dis'-fis'-gis') of the Heinrich Humpert bell foundry from Brilon was delivered in December 1911. The two larger ones were requisitioned as war material on July 1, 1917 and only replaced by new ones in 1925. In 1942 all three were broken up on the spot and also requisitioned. On February 28, 1956, four new bells (chime disposition h °, e ', d' and g ') were cast by Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher and consecrated on March 18, 1956.

Not much is known about the first organ . The second had been collecting since 1936 and in 1940 commissioned from the Dorsten organ builder Franz Breil .
