Sankt Laurentius is a Roman Catholic church in the Wanne district of the city of Herne , on Hauptstrasse / Karlstrasse.

The church was built under cathedral master builder Arnold Güldenpfennig in the years 1884 to 1892 in brick construction as a three-aisled hall church in neo-Gothic style. The foundation stone was laid on August 15, 1884 by Pastor Hackmann from Eickel, the choir and nave were consecrated on October 21, 1885, and the four-storey church tower with paired pointed arched windows was completed in 1892. During the tenure of Pastor Rudolf Wrede, Sankt Laurentius became an independent parish on October 27, 1890. During the Second World War , the church was damaged by artillery fire and bombs. After severe damage from explosive devices on March 4, 1945, it could temporarily no longer be used. After the end of the war, the vaults damaged by cracks and the roof were repaired and the pointed arched windows were poorly glazed. The repair work was not completed until 1948, the design of the church on August 14, 1955. On April 13, 1987 the building was entered in the list of architectural monuments of the city of Herne. Sankt Laurentius belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Since January 1, 2019, Sankt Laurentius has merged together with all other Catholic parishes in the Wanne-Eickeler urban area to form the St. Christophorus parish.

In 1898 an organ with 28 registers was built by the Dorsten organ building workshop Franz Breil for around 13,000 marks, renovated from 1974 to 1975 and put into operation with 30 registers. In the choir there is a wall mosaic by the artist Edmund Schuitz, inaugurated at Christmas 1953 (design and execution 1952–1954), the glass windows were created by Georg Meistermann from 1978 to 1988 . The works of art include the graphic “The Encounter with Death” by Käthe Kollwitz , icons , late Gothic Madonnas and panel paintings from the 15th to 17th centuries. In the entrance area of ​​the nave is the 2.30 m high bronze figure “The Beggar” created by Ernst Barlach in 1930, his “Teaching Christ” in the north aisle and his 1.20 m tall “Wanderer in the Wind” attached to a column. Some sculptures come from Gerhard Marcks , including the bronze depictions of "Saint George", "Saint Martin" and "The Mourner". Opposite it is the woodcut “The Prisoner” by Christian Rohlfs from 1918. In the northern Marienkapelle there are seven gouaches by the painter Georges Rouault arranged in a cross. Ernst Oldenburg created the "Way of the Cross of Christ" and Ewald Mataré created the "Peter". Josef Rikus created the altar, baptismal font and ambo .
