St. Konrad, Herne

Pre- and building history

On December 27, 1905, the history of Catholic life in the Constantin district of Herne began with the inauguration of the Constantin Monastery, which was built by the United Constantin the Great . The Sisters of Mercy of St. Vinzenz von Paul moved in (until 1985) and built a kindergarten, a sewing school and an outpatient clinic. This marked the beginning of the formation of the community in the district, which was still administered by the St. Bonifatius community and, from 1907, by the Herz-Jesu community . In 1920 the parish was looked after by Vicar Beyer. In 1949, Vicar Josef Klens was responsible for the community and the rectory was built. Since December 24, 1912 and January 3, 1920 (regularly on Sundays) church services, baptisms, weddings, conferences, group evenings for young people, church choir rehearsals and small celebrations have taken place in the Constantin Stift.
As early as April 19, 1918, a 0.24 hectare plot of land was acquired on Kronenstrasse, followed by a 0.063 hectare background piece on September 15, 1918, to enable a church to be built there. On April 24, 1941, a parish with no assets of its own was established under the name of Brother Konrad Parish Vicarie . The vicar Villis from the Sacred Heart of Jesus was appointed parish vicar. After vicar Trimborn, Johannes Klens became vicar of St. Konrad and on November 28, 1949 he moved into the newly built vicarage house on Kronenstrasse (today the parish office and residential building).

In 1951 Vicar Felix Wahle took office in the community. His main focus was on building his own parish church . In 1952 the foundation stone of the parish church was ceremonially laid. Even before the church was completed, St. Konrad officially became an independent parish on April 1, 1954 under Pastor Felix Wahle. The first service took place on May 3, 1954 and on March 20, 1955, the church was consecrated on Kronenstrasse.

Works of art worth seeing

The current overall design of the St. Konrad Church extended over a period of more than 30 years, even though the uniform concept was justified in the first draft. The artist Werner-Jakob Korsmeier was able to realize his artistic composition in the entire interior in 1969. Two abstract spatial sculptures made of polyester with a height of approx. 10 meters and a width of 6.4 meters give the church its dominant appearance.

The modeling of the finest light and shadow effects shapes the room in such a way that a strong meditative silence and concentration is created. The sculptures of the altar, ambo and sedes, created with rich plasticity, form the place of the Eucharist in their deep gray basalt lava rock . Fifty individual works, sculptures, sculptures, bronze devices form the coordinated overall effect of the work. So z. B.

  • the bronze sculpture in a basalt stele of the Mother of Good Advice in the left nave,
  • the entire system of the sacrament chapel at the end of the right aisle on a polyester basis,
  • five angel sculptures in front of the pews made of basalt lava,
  • the cross of St. Konrad on the large polyester sculpture in the choir, also made of polyester.

The entire church space is planned, executed and preserved as a complete work of art.

On the one hand, the glass paintings, as in the Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Herne-Süd) , come from Jupp Gesing from 1955 ( rosette ) and the ship windows from Nikolaus Bette from 1969.
