The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Antonius of the Catholic parish Corpus Christi Castrop-Rauxel is located in the center of the Ickern district and belongs to the Emschertal dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua .

Building history and structure

After sinking the shaft leakage half was from the predominantly Protestant peasantry with 608 residents in seven years a community of some 14,500 souls. The 7,600 Catholics belonged to the mother parish of St. Remigius in Mengede , which had an emergency church built in 1911 . A planned neo-Gothic church building could not be built due to the First World War . In 1918 the Catholic miners' community of Ickern was raised to an independent parish, and thanks to the commitment of the new community under Pastor Franz Hillebrand (1874–1943), the church of St. Antonius could be built between 1922 and 1925 . The design came from the Essen architect Alfred Fischer ; this church is his only sacred building .

The style of the St. Antonius Church is assigned to Brick Expressionism . From the outside, the building is laid out as a classic basilica with a nave and two side aisles. The tower was designed by Fischer based on the boiler house of the Victor 3/4 colliery, which he also designed. This clear horizontal structure contradicts the parabolic shape inside , because here Fischer has dispensed with right angles and straight lines. The nave is in the form of a main tunnel and all the naves are designed as parabolic arches. The Rabitz wire plastering process, which was new for this type of construction at the time, made it possible to erect the structure 15 m wide and 17.5 m high.

In 1970, in the course of a thorough renovation, a wooden coffered ceiling was hung to reduce the hall. The aisles were originally covered with elliptical barrel vaults. Due to the changes, the side aisles are now flat covered. The tower hall was also spatially separated from the nave. In 1990 the wooden ceiling in the nave was removed and the church was placed under monument protection in December 1996 .

The church windows are mainly by the glass painter Hubert Spierling (until 1970) and by Jupp Gesing from 1986.

The ringing consists of four cast steel bells, cast in 1925 by the Bochumer Verein and tuned to a ° -cis'-e'-fis'.

Mother Church of St. Anthony

In the 1950s the number of parishioners rose to over 11,000, making the St. Antonius parish one of the largest parishes in the entire archbishopric. For this reason, the parish priest at the time, Adolf Frieling, suggested building a new church in the north-western part of Ickern. Thus between 1956 and 1959 the church of St. Barbara was built , whose congregation initially formed a parish vicarie and from 1960 an independent parish.

Pastoral Association Castrop-Rauxel Nord

On February 1st, 2003 the four cath. Parishes of St. Barbara and St. Antonius, Ickern, St. Josef, Habinghorst and Herz Jesu, Rauxel incorporated into the Castrop-Rauxel Nord pastoral network. All four communities remained legally independent. Only pastoral care and pastoral care were more closely linked. An example of cooperation is e.g. B. the common procession on the feast of Corpus Christi . In addition, in the pastoral association council and other committees at the deanery and diocese level, the merger to form a common overall parish was prepared in 2015. This process was called "Effata - Open yourself!".

Catholic Parish Corpus Christi

On January 1, 2015, the four parishes of the Pastoral Association Castrop-Rauxel Nord were abolished and merged into the new parish Corpus Christi. At the same time, the pastoral association Castrop-Rauxel Nord expired. The newly founded parish is the first overall parish in the Emschertal deanery. The parish of St. Antonius, like the other three parishes, became a sub-parish of the entire parish.

While retaining its church title , the "Parish Church of St. Antonius" became one of three "Affiliate Churches of the Parish Corpus Christi". The only parish church is the St. Josef Church in Habinghorst.

With the foundation of the parish, there is now only one parish council, one parish council and one local parish committee in each parish, which is supposed to maintain, promote and shape life in the pastoral field.
