Siesta Mexikana (Original title: Mexicali Shmoes ) is an American animated short film directed by Friz Freleng from 1959.

action

The cats Jose and Manuel are lying lazily on a wall and singing a Mexican song on the guitar when Speedy Gonzales appears and asks if none of them have an appetite for a mouse. While Manuel pounces on Speedy and the mouse hurries away, Jose remains listless. He explains to Manuel that Speedy, the fastest mouse in Mexico, can never be caught by speed, but only by an intelligent approach.

Both now try several times to catch Speedy Gonzales, be it by dancing in front of his mouse hole, by dynamite or by mines . In the end, they are always the ones who fall victim to their tricks. So they plan to give up the hunt for Speedy Gonzales and instead catch the slowest mouse in Mexico, Speedy's cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez. Manuel tries in vain to warn Jose who is catching the mouse: Since she has a revolver, shoots at Jose and then slowly disappears into her mouse hole, this catch attempt is not a success either.

production

Siesta Mexikana was released on July 4, 1959 as part of the Warner Bros. animated film series Speedy Gonzales , a sub-series of the Looney Tunes series . All characters are voiced by Mel Blanc .

It was the first of two Speedy Gonzales films to feature Speedy's cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez. In the German version he got the name Trödel-Fritz.

Awards

Siesta Mexikana was nominated for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film " in 1960 , but could not prevail against Moonbird .
