Creation, development and publication

The first animated film with Speedy Gonzales was Mexican Cuisine by Robert McKimson from 1953. However, the character in this first film was still thin, rat-like and had a large gold tooth.

For the second film, The fastest mouse in Mexico in 1955, the figure was of Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt redesigned and Warner Bros. produced. The film won an Oscar for best animated short film in 1956 .

Speedy Gonzales is mostly hunted by the tomcat Sylvester , also called gringo here. From 1960 Daffy Duck is often the antagonist of the Mexican mouse. Speedy can usually run away from his pursuers and outsmart them.

In 1999 the character was put on hold by Cartoon Network as the character would serve racist stereotypes. This applies particularly to the other Mexican mice from the cartoons (such as the character Slowpoke Rodriguez), who, in contrast to the lively mouse Speedy, are often portrayed as slow, stupid and lazy. In the German version he is called Trödel-Fritz, is Speedy's cousin and is entitled “The slowest mouse in Mexico”.

In 2003, Speedy Gonzales had a brief appearance in the movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action , in which his status as politically incorrect and racist was discussed. The character also had another brief appearance in an episode of Mucha Lucha .

In 2010 a Speedy Gonzales movie was announced, but it should have nothing to do with the racist portrayal of the figure from the 1950s. In April 2016 it was announced that the project of a Speedy Gonzales film will be pursued further.
