Sylvester and Tweety are two cartoon heroes whose fate is inextricably linked: Sylvester the cat always hunts the little bird Tweety in vain. Sylvester and Tweety are part of the Looney Tunes ensemble .

history

The bird Tweety was there first: in 1942 he appeared in an animated film produced by Warner Brothers , in which he had to save himself from the devouring cats Babbit and Catsello. There were initially no further episodes with Tweety. Sylvester's screen debut was in the short animated film Without Love, Life Is Empty . And with the success, the two opponents became two expressive personalities:

Tweety is a yellow canary that rocks back and forth on a swing in a parrot cage and, after a nasal and squeaky whispered "There was a kitty", puts itself in great danger, curious and naive at the same time Mastering a bit of luck. New Year's Eve is the "unlucky person" who does not want to succeed and whose hunt for Tweety usually ends with the fact that he is beaten by "Granny", the grandmother who lives with Tweety.

Tweety and his typical baby language are an invention of the illustrator Bob Clampett . In the English original, Tweety cannot pronounce an “s” or a “th”. Mel Blanc , who speaks the original voice, made Tweety's "I tawt I taw a puddy tat" ("I thought, I saw a pussy-cat") a hit in 1950.

Sylvester's second archenemy is Speedy Gonzales , the fastest mouse in Mexico.

Sylvester also has a son named Junior. Usually he tries to teach his offspring how to hunt mice or birds, but the little tomcat is always bitterly disappointed in his father. There are 13 short films with Sylvester Junior, he also has an appearance in the film Space Jam .

Origins of names

The name Tweety is a play on the English verb to tweet and the adjective sweet , an allusion to Tweety's baby-like pronunciation difficulties, which made him (in the English original) the "s" in "sweet" like " t ”,“ tweet ”can be pronounced.

The name Sylvester possibly comes from the zoological species name "silvestris" of the house cat : Felis silvestris catus .
