Space Jam is an animation / fantasy film starring Michael Jordan from 1996 .

action

Little Michael Jordan throws a basketball hoop in the garage driveway of his parents' house. He tells his father that he wants to play basketball first in college, later in the NBA , and then switch to baseball . During the opening credits, the most important stages in Jordan's playing career are shown. The following is an excerpt from the press conference at which Jordan announced his exit from basketball.

Meanwhile somewhere in space: Swackhammer is the owner of the amusement park on the planet Moron Mountain . He is looking for new attractions because his visitors are bored. That's why he sends the Nerdlucks ( five little aliens ) to earth to kidnap some Looney Tunes . When they arrive, they meet Bugs Bunny , Daffy Duck and the others. When the Looney Tunes found out about their plan, they laughed at the Nerdlucks. But the Looney Tunes quickly realized that this was not a joke. Bugs convinces the nerdlucks that they are allowed to defend themselves. They challenge the nerdlucks to a game of basketball. This is where the Looney Tunes see their superiority, as the Nerdlucks are very small and underdeveloped and cannot move very quickly. The nerdlucks, who don't know what basketball is, agree to the proposal. When they learn how to play basketball, they immediately come up with a plan.

They steal the talent of some NBA stars ( Charles Barkley , Patrick Ewing , Muggsy Bogues , Larry Johnson and Shawn Bradley ) and take it, turning them into gigantic monsters. The Looney Tunes need the support of someone who is very knowledgeable about the sport.

At the same time, former basketball legend Michael Jordan is playing golf with friends (including Bill Murray and Larry Bird ) . When he tries to get the golf ball out of the hole, he is suddenly drawn into it and finds himself in Looney-Tune-Land. Bugs chose Michael because he is one of the best basketball players in the world. Michael doesn't know what to do here at first and explains to them that he's now a professional baseball player. When, however, an unexpected confrontation with the Nerdlucks takes place and they insult Michael, he realizes the seriousness of the situation and agrees to train the Looney Tunes. But he still needs his basketball clothes and basketball shoes. So Daffy and Bugs go to his house to get the sports gear. They are discovered by Michael's children. Bugs and Daffy let them know about their plan, but tell them not to tell anyone about it.

At the same time, medical professionals, psychologists and the NBA are puzzled as to why the star players lost their skills. These fall into depression and take part in CTs , EKG , laser radiation and psychological sessions and even seek advice from fortune tellers.

In the game between the Looney Tunes and the Nerdlucks, who now call themselves MonStars , Michael and his team seem to have no chance. So Bugs uses a trick to motivate his friends: he pretends to have an invincible drink. In truth, it's just water. Thereupon the Tunes catch up again. Swackhammer, who came to earth for the game, demands time out and complains that the Tunes have someone on their team. Michael Jordan proposes a deal to Swackhammer: If his team wins, the Nerdlucks must give their NBA colleagues back their talent. If the MonStars win , Michael will be a living attraction on Moron Mountain for the rest of his life .

When there are only ten seconds left to play and the MonStars threaten to win with a point, rescue comes from an unexpected side: Bill Murray offers himself as a player. With his help, Michael can throw a basket at the last second.

The Looney Tunes win the game by one point. The nerdlucks shoot their boss with a rocket on the moon and return the stolen talent. They ask the Looney Tunes to stay with them. Michael Jordan returns to the real world with the Nerdlucks spaceship. After the five NBA players have regained their skills, Michael Jordan wants to know again: He will be a player in the Chicago Bulls again .

“The common sensational pairing of a star player with the popular cartoon characters was trusted to such an extent that there was little concern about the artistic implementation. Despite the technically perfect animation, the charm of the characters, who are also making their feature film debut, fell by the wayside. "

“The encounters between the three- and two-dimensional worlds are technical masterpieces and have not been better staged since Roger Rabbit . The basketball passages in particular seem almost real. Space Jam offers, despite the simple story, perfect entertainment even for basketball junkies thanks to the toons. "

“Basically, Space Jam is a very American film. […] In general, the subject of basketball is more of an American affair and the Warner Toons are so completely different in character from the Disney characters they have come to love. But that is precisely where the charm of Space Jam lies . Because nothing against the lovely Disney characters, but the sometimes anarchic of Bugs and Daffy Duck is also refreshingly different. "
