Tyrone Curtis "Muggsy" Bogues (born January 9, 1965 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ) is a former American basketball player who was used as a point guard in the NBA for 14 seasons . He played for four teams over the course of his career and had most success with the Charlotte Hornets . From August 3, 2005 to January 2007, he coached the Charlotte Sting in the Women's National Basketball Association . With a height of 1.60 meters, Muggsy Bogues is the smallest player in NBA history.

biography

Childhood and college / high school

Tyrone Curtis Bogues was born in Baltimore in 1965. He attended Dunbar High School in Baltimore and played on the local basketball team with David Wingate, Reggie Williams and Reggie Lewis , who later came to the NBA like him. In the following years, Bogues successfully played basketball at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina . In his first year of college he averaged 11 points, 8 assists and 3 steals per game. A year later he was able to improve his average to 15 points, 9 assists and 2 steals per game.

He stopped growing during his sophomore year of college at Wake Forest University. In the 1986/87 college season, the 1.60-meter-tall Bogues won the “Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award” for the best college player under 1.70 meters tall.

NBA career

In 1987, Muggsy Bogues was ranked twelfth on the Washington Bullets basketball team in the 1987 NBA NBA Draft . Bogues played alongside Manute Bol , one of the tallest players in NBA history with a height of 2.31 meters, and was nicknamed “Muggsy” by viewers and fans. Like Bol, Bogues had played before his rookie season with the Rhode Island Gulls in the United States Basketball League and received a call to the first team of that league. In his rookie season, Bogues was able to achieve an average of 5.0 points, 5.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.7 rebounds.

On June 22, 1988, Bogues was taken by the Charlotte Hornets in the Expansion Draft . After moving to Charlotte, North Carolina , he was able to improve his passport and steal skills. In the 1989/90 season he was voted Hornets Player of the Year with an average of 9.4 points, 10.7 assists and 2 steals per game. Bogues was one of the league's most popular players, and his number 1 Hornets jersey was a bestseller for years.

Bogues was able to show a new club record with 170 steals in the 1991/92 season. In addition, Bogues holds the Hornets record for the most assists in one season (867 in the 1989/90 season) and one game (19). Muggsy Bogues is the Charlotte Hornets all-time leader with 5,557 assists and 1,067 steals.

On July 11, 1997 Bogues moved to the Golden State Warriors together with his Hornets teammate Tony Delk . In return, the 1.88 meter tall point guard B. J. Armstrong came from the Golden State Warriors to the Charlotte Hornets. On September 23, 1999, he signed a contract as a free agent and went to the Toronto Raptors for the 1999/2000 season .

Coach of the Charlotte Sting

Since leaving the NBA in 2001, Bogues has worked in real estate. From August 3, 2005 until the team was disbanded in 2007, he was the head coach of the Charlotte Sting in the Women's National Basketball Association . Since then he has worked for the Charlotte Hornets as a team ambassador and radio announcer.

1996 Muggsy Bogues had a guest appearance in the sports film Eddie . The film is about a fan (played by Whoopi Goldberg ) who is declared to coach the New York Knicks through a competition .
