Reggie Lewis (born November 21, 1965 in Baltimore , † July 27, 1993 in Waltham , Massachusetts ) was a basketball player from the United States . He ran from 1987 to 1993 for the Boston Celtics .

Career

A native of Baltimore , he came to Northeast College in Boston via Dunbar High School and was drafted in the first round with the 22nd pick in 1987 . In his rookie season, he played an average of only 8.3 minutes per game and scored 4.5 points. In his second season, Larry Bird was injured almost the entire season. Lewis stepped in and achieved a points average of 18.5 with an average time of 32.3 minutes. In the 1990/91 season he was a valuable 6th man in the squad of the Celtics and made the jump to the starting line-up in the following season 1991-92. After Bird's resignation, Lewis took over the post of captain of the Celtics. He was elected to the All-Star Team for the only time in 1992 and posted seven points and four rebounds in 15 minutes. Overall, he scored 20.8 points per game in his last two seasons with the Celtics and achieved a career average of 17.6 points per use. He played in 401 of 410 possible games from the beginning of the 1988/89 season to 1992/1993.

In 1993 he led the Celtics into the playoffs against the Charlotte Hornets . A previously undiscovered heart defect occurred in game one on April 29th. Lewis collapsed on the field and was out for the remainder of the playoffs. Boston lost the playoff series with 1: 3. On July 27, 1993, Lewis resumed training. At his former university, Northeastern, he was practicing his dreaded jump throws when he collapsed again and died of complications from his heart defect.

The Boston Celtics withdrew his # 35 jersey after his death, and it hangs in his honor in their original home ground, the Matthews Arena. The Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, which bears his name, also opened in Roxburry , Massachusetts.
