Box Office Mojo is a US website that reports on box office earnings from movies .

history

The English language website was founded in 1999 by Brandon Gray. Sean Saulsbury became its partner from 2002 and together they expanded the site, so that the site has up to 2 million visitors a month. In July 2008, Box Office Mojo was purchased by Internet Movie Database , a subsidiary of Amazon.com . As a result, games such as Fantasy Box Office and Create A Year of Movies were discontinued for financial reasons. The forum with over 15,000 users was officially closed on November 2nd, 2011. Since then, all registered users have been redirected to the Internet Movie Database.

Working principle

Box Office Mojo collects the weekly box office results from 50 countries and has the historical box office results from 53 countries. For individual films, box office results from up to 107 countries are available. This data is used to compile statistics and tables, with the joint data from the USA and Canada ('Domestic') being shown separately from the box office results from the rest of the world ('Foreign').

The figures given by Box Office Mojo are gross receipts, i.e. the sums paid by moviegoers at the box office, and thus include income from the cinema operator and taxes in addition to the film rental income. Box Office Mojo does not disclose exactly where the numbers come from. They are presumably sent electronically by the cinema operators to Box Office Mojo, although many smaller cinemas are not allowed to be recorded.
