development

A sequel to Space Jam was planned for 1997. At the start of development, Space Jam 2 was supposed to feature a new basketball competition between the Looney Tunes and a new villain named Berserk-O! include. The artist Bob Camp was responsible for the design of Berserk-O! and commissioned his henchmen. Joe Pytka would have returned as a director. However, Michael Jordan did not agree to appear in a sequel. According to Camp, one producer lied to design artists by claiming Jordan committed to a sequel to keep development going. Warner Bros. eventually canceled plans for Space Jam 2 .

A potential sequel should be Spy Jam with Jackie Chan in the lead role. The studio was also planning a film called Race Jam , in which Jeff Gordon would have starred . Additionally, Pytka revealed that after the success of the first film, a story had been proposed for a sequel in which professional golfer Tiger Woods was the main actor and Michael Jordan would have played a minor role. Producer Ivan Reitman reportedly voted in favor of a film in which Jordan would again star. The follow-up films were eventually canceled in favor of Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). A film called Skate Jam was in early development with Tony Hawk in the lead role. Production was planned to begin immediately after Looney Tunes: Back in Action was released , but was canceled despite the improved critical reception given the film's poor financial reception.

Resumption

In February 2014, Warner Bros. officially announced work on a sequel that would star LeBron James . Charlie Ebersol was to produce while Willie Ebersol wrote the script. In May of that year, James was quoted as saying, “I've always loved Space Jam . It was one of my favorite films when I was little. ”In July 2015, James and his studio, SpringHill Entertainment, signed a contract with Warner Bros. for television, film and digital content after receiving positive reviews for his role on Trainwreck . Until 2016, Justin Lin signed the project as director and co-screenwriter with Andrew Dodge and Alfredo Botello. In November 2016 teaser trailer in form was a Nike advertising on Twitter published under #MonstarsBack. Later in December, Bugs Bunny and the Monstars appeared in a Foot Locker commercial starring Blake Griffin and Jimmy Butler . In August 2018, Lin left the project and Terence Nance was hired to direct the film. In September 2018, Ryan Coogler was announced as the producer for the film. SpringHill Entertainment released a promotional image officially announcing the film. The start of production was scheduled for 2019 during the NBA's summer break . The shooting takes place in California . Prior to production, the film received $ 21.8 million in tax credits as a result of a new California state tax program.

Recordings for the film began on June 25, 2019. On July 16, 2019, it was announced that Nance was leaving the project because he and "the studio / producer had different views on the creative vision of Space Jam 2 " and that Malcolm D . Lee would serve as his replacement.
