Nnemkadi "Nneka" Ogwumike (born July 2, 1990 in Tomball , Texas ) is an American basketball player . She has been a member of the Women's National Basketball Association for the Los Angeles Sparks since 2012 .
Career
college
Ogwumike, whose parents are from Nigeria , grew up in the Houston area . From 2008 to 2012 she played for the Stanford Cardinal , including two years with her younger sister Chiney Ogwumike . There she reached the Final Four of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in all four seasons , and in 2010 also the final of this NCAA tournament.
WNBA
Following her college career, Nneka Ogwumike was first selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2012 WNBA Draft . After her first season, she was recognized as the best newcomer in the league with the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award .
In the following years Ogwumike always reached the play-offs with the Sparks , but where the team was eliminated early. In 2014 she was elected to the All-WNBA Second Team . Her best season to date was 2016 , when the Sparks won 20 of their first 21 games and Ogwumike led the league in terms of batting average. In addition, on June 11, 2016, against the Dallas Wings, she set a WNBA record for the most field throws without misses in a game (12). At the end of the season, Ogwumike received the WNBA Most Valuable Player Award for her achievements . Then she won the WNBA championship with the Sparks, where she hit the throw to 77-76 final 3.1 seconds before the end in the decisive game of the final series against the Minnesota Lynx . After Ogwumike reached the finals again with the Sparks in 2017 and this time failed in just five games at the Lynx, the 2018 season ended prematurely for Ogwumike and the Sparks in the second playoff round. Ogwumike reached the playoffs with the Sparks in all WNBA seasons so far.
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Nneka Ogwumike plays like many WNBA players in Europe. She was on the pitch for teams from Russia and Poland. Most recently she played for the Russian team of Dynamo Kursk .
National team
Even as a junior, Ogwumike was active and successful in the respective US national teams. She won the U-18 American Basketball Championship for women with the US juniors in 2008 and the U-19 World Women's Basketball Championship in 2009 . In 2011 she also won the gold medal at the Universiade with the US student selection. In 2014 won the title with the US national team at the World Basketball Championship . At the 2018 World Cup , she was able to successfully defend the title with the US team.
