Tina Charles (born December 5, 1988 in New York City , New York ) is an American basketball player who has been under contract with the New York Liberty in the Women's National Basketball Association since 2014 . She was selected in the first overall position by the Connecticut Sun in the 2010 WNBA Draft .

Career

High school

In her teens, Charles attended Christ The King Regional High School and played for their high school basketball team. In her senior year of high school, she averaged 26.5 points and 14.8 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game. For this outstanding achievement, she was named WBCA National Player of the Year , New York City Player of the Year , McDonald's All-American and Miss New York Basketball . In addition, she won the city and Catholic state championships several times with the high school basketball team. After her time at Christ The King Regional High School , Charles moved to the University of Connecticut .

College (2006 to 2010)

Charles studied at the University of Connecticut from 2006 to 2010 , graduating with a degree in psychology (majoring in criminal justice). In total, she completed four seasons for the Huskies , with which she won the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division I Basketball Championships of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . She has received numerous honors and awards for her outstanding achievements in university sports, including the 2010 Naismith Trophy and Big East Player of the Year .

WNBA (since 2010)

Because of her good performance for the Huskies, Charles had attracted the attention of the Women's National Basketball Association franchises , which made her a possible first overall draft pick at the 2010 WNBA Draft . In the draft, she was finally selected by the Connecticut Sun in the first place.

Charles quickly integrated into the Sun's squad in her 2010 rookie season and rose to the top early on. She finished her first season with an average of 15.5 points and 11.7 rebounds per game (team-internal and WNBA rookie record 2010). In addition, Charles, who was in the starting line-up in all 34 games of the regular season , scored 22 double doubles and set a new WNBA season record with a total of 398 rebounds. For these outstanding achievements she was named WNBA Rookie of the Year at the end of the season . Despite these many individual successes, team success failed to materialize this season when they failed to reach the playoffs with the Sun with 17 wins in 34 games .

Her second WNBA season was just as successful as her first. She led the league again in this category with an average of 11 rebounds per game, and set a new franchise record with 17.6 points per game. In addition, she was elected to the starting line-up of the WNBA All-Star Games for the first time in 2011 (note: no All-Star Game took place in 2010 due to the World Cup). Because of these achievements, Charles, who finished second in the election for the best player , also played a major role in the fact that the Sun qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2008, where the franchise failed in the first round at the Atlanta Dream .

2012 was the most successful season for Charles in the WNBA up to that point. She reached the playoffs again with the team and was able to win a series there for the first time. The season ended with a narrow defeat in the Conference Finals against the eventual champions of Indiana Fever . After the season she was named the best player in the league . She was also the best rebounder in the league for the third time. In 2013 it was not possible to build on the successes. The Sun was the worst team in the league and Charles was left without personal awards.

Before the 2014 season, she moved to the New York Liberty team . Even in her hometown, she and her team did not reach the playoffs in the first season. In 2015 , the Liberty team achieved the best record in the WNBA with Charles. After a success against the Washington Mystics in the first playoff round, the season ended again with a loss to the Indiana Fever in the Conference Finals. In 2016 she became the second player after Lauren Jackson to be the best points collector and rebouder in one season. In both 2016 and 2017 , she played a good regular season with Liberty, but failed after a bye in the first play-off round against an outsider in the second play-off round. Despite constant performances from Tina Charles, the Liberty played a poor 2018 season and missed the playoffs significantly.

Europe (since 2010)

During the WNBA season break, Tina Charles plays like many WNBA players in Europe. She was on the field for teams from Russia, Poland and Turkey. Most recently she played for the Turkish team of Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the 2014/15 season .

National team (since 2010)

After she was able to win the title with the US juniors at the 2006 American Championships, she also played successfully with the US women's national team . At the basketball world championship in 2010 she won the gold medal with the national team. The Americans won all nine games, which qualified the team for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Charles scored an average of 10.7 points with an average playing time of 16.4 minutes per game. At the Olympic Games in London she was able to win the title with the team there too. She was able to defend both successes at the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At the 2018 World Cup , Charles won the title for the third time with the US team.
