The 17th World Basketball Championship the ladies took from September 27 to October 5, 2014 in Turkey instead. The central committee ( english Central Board ) of the FIBA awarded in March 2011, the orientation of the final tournament of the Association of Turkey. The games took place in the Ankara Arena in the capital Ankara and the Abdi İpekçi Arena in Istanbul . The final round of the tournament took place in the Ülker Sports Arena , also in Istanbul.

The United States became world champions for the ninth time .

At the tournament itself, a preliminary round was held in four groups with four teams each, each of which competed once against each other within the groups in round- robin mode. The teams placed second and third in groups A and B as well as groups C and D played an elimination game in a crossover manner. The winner of the respective elimination games was qualified together with the group winners for the quarter-finals, in which the tournament was continued in the knockout system as in the elimination games . The losers of the quarter-finals played a “consolation round” for places five to eight. The losers of the semi-finals played against each other for the bronze medal, while the winner of the final was crowned world champion.

Preliminary round

The pairings of the preliminary round were determined on March 15, 2014 by lottery. The games were played in round-robin mode.
