The Belarusian national basketball team of women is the national selection of women of the national association of Belarus in basketball recognized by the world association FIBA . The selection does not only take part in FIBA competitions, but is also a candidate and, if qualified, also a participant in the basketball competitions of the Olympic Games .

history

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union , the now independent Belarusian association became a member of FIBA and its continental association FIBA Europe in 1992 . Among the men, the junior selection in the U-22 age group was able to become Junior European Champion in 1994 , while the men’s selection never qualified for a continental finals. Instead, women were able to move up to the top of Europe after the turn of the millennium . In the first qualification for the European Championship finals , the selection won a bronze medal straight away in Italy in 2007 , after the host Italians were denied entry into the quarter-finals in the decisive group game and the defending champions Czech Republic surprisingly defeated in the quarter-finals . As a result, the selection always reached at least the quarter-finals except for the final round in 2011 , in which they finished ninth, and was then never worse than fifth in the final ranking, although another medal win was missed.

Due to the success in continental finals, the selection also reached the qualification for the global finals of the Olympic Games and the FIBA World Championship . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, the selection in the quarter-finals lost to the host Chinese and was ranked sixth based on the preliminary round results. At the 2010 World Cup finals , it was difficult for the women to qualify for the quarter-finals. In the knockout round there was another surprise when the big neighbors, runner-up European champions and the group winners of the other intermediate round group, who had been unbeaten in the course of the tournament, were defeated and the Russians were surprisingly clearly defeated with 70:53. Against the hosts from the Czech Republic in the semi-finals after extra time, as well as the Spanish women , the selection then missed the first-time medal win in a global final. With the now disappointing European Championship finals in 2011 in neighboring Poland, when they failed to qualify for the quarter-finals despite another victory against the Russians in the decisive group game against the Turks , qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games was also missed. Once again, the Chinese refused to make it into the quarter -finals in the 2014 World Cup finals. For the 2016 Olympic Games , the selection was able to secure the last place in the final qualifying tournament in France in summer 2016.
