The 1998 women's basketball world championship took place from May 26th to June 7th, 1998 in Germany . The games were held in Münster , Wuppertal , Rotenburg an der Fulda , Karlsruhe , Dessau , Bremen and Berlin .
The world championship tournament was contested by 16 nations. The United States became world champions, Russia won silver and Australia won bronze .

Besides Germany , which automatically qualified as the host country, and the United States, which qualified as the reigning Olympic champion , the remaining 14 participants were determined through continental qualifying tournaments:
