Marlies Askamp (born August 7, 1970 in Dorsten , North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a former national basketball player . She is 1.96 meters tall and played at the position Center . She is one of the original players of the US Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

She played basketball and athletics until she was 16 . Only then did she focus exclusively on playing basketball. She describes winning the European League in 1996 and the bronze medal at the European Basketball Championship in 1997 as the most important moments in her life, because it was the result of much hard work.

Askamp has a sister and two brothers. She speaks German, English and French.

Player career

In Germany she also played for BG Dorsten , Bremerhaven (OSC), MTV Wolfenbüttel from 1989 to 1993, BTV Wuppertal from 1994 to 2001 and until the end of her career with NB Oberhausen . She won the German championship six times (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001). In 1996 she won the European league title with Wuppertal and was voted German player of the year.

In the summer months, Askamp moved to the WNBA, which was newly founded in 1996. From 1997 to 1999 she played for the Phoenix Mercury , with whom she was able to move into the finals of the WNBA in 1998 .
