history

The sports hall of the BTV on Heckinghauser Strasse

On October 1, 1846 active gymnasts from Wuppertal founded the Barmer TV 1846 club, making it the oldest sports club in Wuppertal. The first chairman was the manufacturer Heinrich Colsmann. At first there was only gymnastics and fencing, but in early 1900 tennis, batting, music and athletics were added. In 1913 a complete football department changed to BTV. At the end of the 1940s, the club also had a ski and orienteering department. The handball, hockey and basketball departments followed.

At the end of the 1970s, the fencing and hockey departments had to close due to a lack of interest.

successes

In particular, the athletes and basketball players of the club achieved national and international titles.

athletics

The athletics department celebrated its first national successes in 1932. With Kurt Lohmann over 200 meters, Ewald Vach over 800 meters and in the 4 x 100 meter relay, athletes of the BTV win national championships. Emmy Albus ran a new world record with the national relay. She only narrowly missed an Olympic gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, as the final runner in the lead in the German relay team lost the baton.

In 1940, the club also provided the relay world record holder for 3 × 1000 meters with Hans Emde , Werner Lueg and Friedel Stracke and the bronze medalist in the 1952 Olympic 1500 m final with world record holder Werner Lueg.

With Christa Vahlensieck , the club provided the world's best female marathon runner from 1975 to 1980. She improved the world record several times and screwed it down to 2 hours 33 minutes. She also won the famous New Year's Eve run in São Paulo twice .

Women's basketball

Another highlight in the club's history was the BTV women's basketball department, headed by Renate and Joachim Kehrenberg. The first German championship title in 1989 was followed by the series championship from 1993 to 2002. In the years 1989 and 1992 to 2002, the Wuppertal women were also German Cup winners . Internationally, BTV Wuppertal has been the only German women's basketball team to win an international title. In 1996 and 1997 the basketball players reached the final of the Euroleague and won it in 1996.

Well-known players of the club were the local heroines and twins Petra and Martina Kehrenberg, the exceptional German player Marlies Askamp , Ute Krätschmann , Sophie von Saldern , the French Nathalie Lesdema and the Australians Carla Boyd , Sandra Brondello , Kristi Harrower and Michele Timms .

In 2000 the women's basketball department was spun off from the main club for tax reasons. Under the direction of Renate Kehrenberg and the later DBBL managing director Jürgen Kofner († April 25, 2008), the first division team operated under Goldzack Wuppertal until 2002. After the departure of the main sponsor Gold-Zack Werke , the first division team called “Wuppertal Wings” finally came to an end in 2002.
