Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre (German: International New Year's Eve ) has been held every year since 1925 on December 31 , the anniversary of the death of Holy New Year's Eve in the Brazilian city of São Paulo . The run is one of the most famous and traditional people and street races in the world and one of the most important running events in South America. Initially the run was only open to runners living in Brazil, but after the Second World War runners from all over the world could take part. Women have been competing since 1975.

history

Cásper Líbero, a journalist and magazine publisher, is considered to be the initiator of the Corrida. From 1928 his Gazeta Esportiva acted as the organizer. Initially, only male residents of São Paulo were allowed to take part in the run, regardless of their nationality, because the third winner of the run, Heitor Blasi, was an Italian living in São Paulo. Two years later, Blasi was also the first runner to win a second time. In the following years, the race was opened to residents of all of Brazil, with Néstor Gomes in the 1930s and Joaquim Gonçalves da Silva during World War II, two runners achieved a triple victory.

From 1945 the run for runners was initially open to South Americans and from 1947 also to runners from all over the world. In 1947, the Uruguayan Oscar Moreira won the first time a runner who did not live in Brazil; two years later, Viljo Heino from Finland was the first European to win . In 1951, Erich Kruzycki, a German runner, won, and in 1953, Emil Zátopek, the most popular runner of his time, won the race, which also made the race famous around the world. After the Argentine Osvaldo Suárez had won three years in a row in the late 1950s , the Belgian Gaston Roelants was the first runner to win the Corrida four times in the 1960s . The Colombian Víctor Mora discontinued this brand in 1981. From 1986 to 1989, Rolando Vera from Ecuador won four times in a row. The record winner is the Kenyan Paul Tergat , who achieved his fifth victory in 2000. Since 1975, the international year of women , women have officially been allowed to participate. The first two competitions were won by the German Christa Vahlensieck , and from 1981 to 1986 the Portuguese Rosa Mota won six years in a row, making her the record holder. Since 1993 there has been a run for children before the races in the adult class.

The length of the running route has been changed several times in the course of history and has been fixed at 15 kilometers since 1991. The times have only been included in the official road running best list since 1991, although the route is not considered particularly fast due to the weather in the middle of the Brazilian summer and the route profile. The start date has also changed over time. For a long time the run took place at night and the runners could start the New Year celebration practically immediately after the run. Today the women's run starts at 3:00 p.m. local time, the men's run at 5:00 p.m.

At the first event in 1925, 60 runners registered, 48 runners started, and 37 were included in the official results list. In 2004 around 2,000 women and 13,000 men took part in the corrida.
