Juan Martínez (long distance runner)
Juan Martínez ( Juan Maximo Martínez ; born January 1, 1947 in San Juan de las Manzanas Ixtlahuacan , México , Mexico) is a retired Mexican long-distance runner .
Life
After the Summer Olympics in 1964 , the potential Mexican Olympic participants for 1968 were housed in a central training camp in Mexico City , where they trained twice a day under competent guidance. Tadeusz Kempka from Poland was responsible for Martinez , who had extensive group training based on Soviet training theory. Marinez won the Mexican Championships over 5000 m and over 10000 m in Xalapa in 1965 , showing that he was the best man of his training group with modern training. In 1966 he won bronze at the Central American and Caribbean Games over 10,000 m . The following year he was Central America and Caribbean champion in the 10,000 m and half marathon and won bronze in the 5000 m at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg .
At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was fourth over 5000 m and 10,000 m.
In 1969 he won the Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre , and in 1970 he won gold over 10,000 m and silver over 5,000 m at the Central American and Caribbean Games. At the Pan American Games in 1971 in Cali, he came silver over 10,000 m and only had to admit defeat Frank Shorter , and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he was tenth over the same distance.
In total, he set three national records over 5000 m and four over 10,000 m. In 1986 he started in age group competitions. He works as a trainer.
