Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot (since late 2008: Omar Ahmed ; born September 26, 1978 ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who specializes in the marathon distance .

Life

He won the 2002 Milan Marathon and 2003 the Boston Marathon . In 2005 he finished fifth in the Boston Marathon and fourth in the New York City Marathon .

In 2006 he was not only able to win again in Boston with the course record of 2:07:14 h (also personal best), he also won the Chicago Marathon in a dramatic way when he slipped right before the finish and under the finish tape over the Measuring mat slid.

In 2007 he repeated his victory in Boston in stormy conditions in 2:14:13 h. With a fourth place in the Chicago Marathon, he secured early victory in the 2006/07 series of the World Marathon Majors .

In 2008 he was able to win the Boston Marathon again. He is the first male athlete since Bill Rodgers to record four wins in this run. He was nominated for the marathon of the Beijing Olympic Games , but surrendered at short notice due to an injury in favor of Luke Kibet Bowen .

In 2009, his winning streak ended in Boston when he gave up because of back pain. At the marathon of the world championships in Berlin he finished fifth in 2:10:47 h and thus secured the gold in the team classification for the Kenyan team. At the end of the season he finished second in New York City. In 2010 he won the Granollers Half Marathon, and in 2011 he finished seventh in the Shanghai Marathon .

Cheruiyot is unusually tall for a long-distance runner at 1.88 m and weighs 65 kg. He is married and has a daughter. In 2008 he converted to Islam and took the name Omar Ahmed .
