The Boston Marathon is the longest-running marathon after the Olympic Games. It takes place annually on Patriots' Day , the third Monday in April, in the US state of Massachusetts , starting in Hopkinton and finishing in Boston .
The 2020 Boston Marathon planned for April 24th was postponed to September 14th of that year in mid-March as part of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and canceled on May 28th. For the first time in its 124-year history, the Boston Marathon has to be canceled.
history
The first run took place here on April 19, 1897, about a year after the marathon at the 1896 Olympic Games in Greece . In 1946 the Zyperer Stylianos Kyriakides, who raised funds for war-torn Greece, won, and New Balance donated a memorial to his memory in 2004.
In the first run in 1897, 15 athletes competed. Today the number of participants is limited. The Boston Marathon does not allow free registration without requirements and is therefore an exception among the major marathons. He has been using a qualification system since 1970. The qualification standards have since been changed several times. Currently (as of run 2020) men must show between 3:00 and 4:50 h (depending on the age group) and women between 3:30 and 5:20 h from a run that was a maximum of 18 months ago. A maximum of 24,000 runners are allowed. If the number of qualified registrations exceeds this limit, faster runners will be given preference. There are several thousand starting places that are allocated elsewhere. These go to sponsors and the surrounding communities as well as to charitable organizations that award starting places to runners who have collected significant financial contributions (often well over 5,000 US dollars ) for the respective purpose or who have paid them themselves. The qualification times were earlier. At the run in 2014 it was 3:05 h for men up to the age group up to 35 years, for women of the same age group it was 3:35:00 h. In 2007, the standards were a little wider with almost six minutes more for the youngest age group.
The run holds the record for most events as it has been held every year since 1897. However, in 1918, due to the First World War, it was only held as a relay race between the teams from different army bases.
The race was originally reserved for men, and it wasn't until 1966 that Roberta Gibb became the first woman to take part in the Boston Marathon - unofficially and without a start number. In 1967 Kathrine Switzer took part as the first woman with a starting number - she had registered as "KV Switzer" and gave no indication of her gender. During the race, race director Jock Semple tried in vain to force her off the track. It was not until 1972 that women were officially allowed to participate. All eight runners who started, including Switzer, reached the finish. It won Nina Kuscsik .
The best-known female athlete from a German perspective who took part in the Boston Marathon is Uta Pippig . She was the first woman to win the run three times in a row (1994, 1995, 1996). The German runners Liane Winter (1975) and Charlotte Teske (1982) had previously been victorious. The only German man who won the race was Paul de Bruyn in 1932. Herbert Steffny won the Masters ranking in 1996 (runners over 40 years of age).
Since 2006 the Boston Marathon with its 20,000 marathon runners has been one of the World Marathon Majors .
On the day before the 2008 Boston Marathon, the US Athletics Association's elimination race for the 2008 Olympic Games took place on a lap circuit within Boston . The tickets to Beijing were secured by Deena Kastor , Magdalena Lewy-Boulet and Blake Russell .
Two bomb attacks were carried out during the marathon on April 15, 2013. Three people were killed and over 260 people were injured, some seriously.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States , the 2020 Boston Marathon was canceled for the first time. Instead, the race should take place virtually.

Course records
- Men: 2:03:02 h, Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai ( KEN ), 2011
- Women: 2:19:59 h, Bizunesh Deba ( ETH ), 2014
Mutai's time has not been recognized as a marathon world record because the route has a net gradient of 140 meters; According to the regulations, a height difference of 42 meters is tolerated. The women's track record has been held by Deba since 2014, as Jeptoo's victory and track record in this race were revoked due to doping .
