Deriba Merga ( Deriba Merga Ejigu ; born October 26, 1980 in Nekemte ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who specializes in road running.

career

At the road running world championships in Debrecen in 2006 he was sixth over 20 km in 57:27 minutes. In the Ethiopian team that won bronze, he was the fastest.

At the 2007 Paris Marathon he was eleventh in 2:13:33 h. At the 2007 road running world championships in Udine over the half marathon distance, he finished fourth in 59:16 minutes and again won team bronze. His breakthrough on the marathon route came shortly afterwards at the Fukuoka Marathon . There he finished second in 2:06:50 h and, like the winner Samuel Kamau Wanjiru, stayed below the course record.

In 2008 he won the World's Best 10K (10 km) in 28:03 minutes and was sixth in the London Marathon in 2:06:38 hours. He was the second fastest Ethiopian of the year behind Haile Gebrselassie and was nominated for the Olympic Games in Beijing .

In the Olympic marathon, he ensured a high pace for a long time. Only at kilometer 37 did he have to let the eventual winner Samuel Kamau Wanjiru and Jaouad Gharib go, but then suffered a break-in and was overtaken by his compatriot and training partner Tsegay Kebede and pushed to fourth place. Soon afterwards he won the Delhi half marathon in 59:15 minutes and thus equalized the world best time of Haile Gebrselassie.

In 2009 he won the Houston Marathon in January in an impressive manner . With his winning time of 2:07:52 h, he undercut the twenty-year-old course record by over two minutes. In February he finished third in the RAK half marathon in 59:18 minutes after having led for a long time. With his intermediate time of 41:29 min at kilometer 15, he set Felix Limo's world record . In April he won the Boston Marathon in a time of 2:08:42 h. In the 10 km race of the Ottawa Race Weekend , he broke the 21-year-old course record with 27:24 minutes; a week later he won the World 10K Bangalore over the same distance .

At the marathon of the World Championships in Berlin he was still in the top group of three at 35 km, but then fell far behind and gave up the race. In Delhi, however, he was able to defend his title with a time of 59:54 minutes.

In 2010 he finished third in Boston and set a course record in the Bogotá Half Marathon . In 2011 he won the RAK half marathon . A second place in the Lake Biwa marathon was followed by a course record in the Yangzhou-Jianzhen half marathon . and another 10 km victory at the Ottawa Race Weekend.

In 2012 he finished second in the New York City Half Marathon .
