RAK half marathon
The RAK Half Marathon (English RAK Half Marathon ) is a half marathon that takes place in Ra's al-Khaimah , United Arab Emirates . The abbreviation RAK is derived from Ras Al Khaimah , the English transcription of the venue.
It has been held annually in February since 2007 and was considered the world's best-endowed half marathon. However, the Zayed International Half Marathon in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2010 paid out significantly higher prize money to the winners.
The flat route and the regular high-profile field of participants make the RAK half marathon one of the fastest in the world. In 2007 , Samuel Kamau Wanjiru achieved a world best time in the half marathon with 58:53 minutes, which was not recognized as a world record because there was no EPO test. His intermediate time of 41:29 minutes after 15 kilometers corresponded to the world record of his compatriot Felix Limo over this distance.
Ethiopian Deriba Merga ran the same intermediate time in 2009 , but ultimately only finished third in 59:18 minutes. The winner Patrick Makau Musyoki from Kenya achieved the second fastest half marathon time ever run in 2009 with 58:52 minutes, while Dire Tune from Ethiopia moved up to fifth place in the world best list with 1:07:18 hours and set a national record. In 2011 the Kenyan Mary Keitany improved the world record by 35 seconds to 1:05:50 h. After Florence Kiplagat had increased the world record at the Barcelona Half Marathon to 1:05:12 h in 2014 and 1:05:09 h in 2015, Peres Jepchirchir undercut this mark in her victory in Ra's al-Khaimah in 2017 with her winning time of 1:05 : 06 h again by 3 seconds. In 2018, her compatriot Fancy Chemutai was able to improve this time further, but in 1:04:52 h only exceeded the world record held by Joyciline Jepkosgei for one second . Two years later, the Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh improved the world record still held by Jepkosgei by 20 seconds to 1:04:31 h.
