The Pipistrel Sinus is an ultra- light motor glider from the Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel .
history
The development of the sinus began in 1994 in close cooperation with the Slovenian company Alabastar Ltd . Just one year later, the project was presented to the public for the first time at AERO 95 in Friedrichshafen . The first flight of the prototype followed in 1996. In 2001 Philippe Zen and Thomas Knowles took part in the World Air Games in Spain with a Sinus and took first place in the two-seater division.
construction
The Sinus is a modern two-seater ultralight aircraft made of plastic. Compared to its sister model Virus, the wings of the shoulder wing are designed more for gliding and are equipped with both sturgeon and flaps in the form of flaperons . The manual controllable pitch propeller ( Pipistrel VARIO ) can be aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft when the engine is switched off in order to reduce air resistance in glider operation.
In addition to the standard version with a tail wheel, there is also the Sinus NW with a nose wheel landing gear . The Rotax 503 , 582 and 912 models are used as the motor .
A version adapted to the approval requirements of the US LSA class has existed since 2010 . Since the American regulations exclude a controllable pitch propeller for this class, the angle of attack of the propeller blades is fixed in this version in motorized flight; When the engine is switched off, the propeller automatically moves to the glider position.
use
Due to its very high cruising speed of 200 km / h, the Sinus can easily keep up with classic touring motor gliders like the Super Dimona . In addition, with a glide ratio of 27 , it offers gliding characteristics that correspond to those of a Schleicher K 8 .
