Pipistrel is a Slovenian aircraft manufacturer for ultralight aircraft based in Ajdovščina . The name Pipistrel was derived from Pipistrellus , the scientific name of the genus of the pipistrelle bat .
history
Owner and director is Ivo Boscarol, who on November 10, 1987 was the first Yugoslav to receive a private license to produce aircraft. Pipistrel was chosen as the name of the company for the manufacture of microlight aircraft. In 1989 the first weight- controlled ultralight aircraft (trike) "Ajdovscina" designed by Ivo Boscarol and Bojan Sajovic took off for its maiden flight; until 1992 a total of 32 pieces of this model were built. After a few more trikes, development of the first aerodynamically controlled ultralight aircraft, the Pipistrel Sinus , began in 1994 , which was presented for the first time in 1995 and made its maiden flight in 1996. In 2003, a new plant was completed at Ajdovščina airfield . Today models like the Pipistrel Virus are mass-produced there.
The company broke new ground with the Pipistrel Taurus Electro , a self-launching, two-seater retractable engine glider, which is equipped with a 40 kW electric drive in the current version G2. The capacity of the built-in battery allows ascents of up to 2000 meters in altitude. In Germany the Taurus Electro G2 has provisional approval as an ultralight aircraft .
The Pipistrel Taurus G4 is a technology test or competition aircraft. The company is also a cooperation partner for the HY4 hydrogen aircraft .
Honourings and prices
In 2011, Pipistrel USA won the “NASA CAFE Green Flight Challenge” with a double-hulled Taurs G4, with which NASA wants to promote the development of fuel-efficient aircraft and aircraft with alternative drives. The winning aircraft had to cover a distance of 200 miles in less than 2 hours, using less than a gallon of fuel per passenger or the equivalent in electrical energy.
