The Pipistrel Taurus G4 is a technology test or competition aircraft from the Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel .
history
The Taurus G4 is a technology platform equipped with a double hull and a motor installed in the middle. With this, Pipistrel wanted to take part in the Green Flight Challenge in September 2011 and to test the propulsion systems for the future Pipistrel four-seater Panthera . In just four months, the aircraft was made from two fuselages of the electric glider Pipistrel TaurusG2 built, which are connected by a five meter long spar. In the middle of this central wing is the aerodynamically clad motor nacelle with a 145 kW electric motor. This is considered to be the largest to date in an aircraft and drives a two-blade propeller with a diameter of two meters. According to Pipistrel, the power supply is provided by lithium polymer batteries weighing over 200 kg. The first flight took place on August 12, 2011 in Oshkosh .
When by Google gesponsertern Green Flight Challenge the CAFE Foundation , which in September 2011 at the Charles M. Schulz - Sonoma County Airport was carried out, the Taurus G4 won in each of the disciplines speed and fuel efficiency . In the third sub-discipline, in which the aircraft was honored with the lowest noise development , it took second place behind the e-Genius . In the overall ranking, Pipistrel took first place and thus the prize money of $ 1.35 million.
The 2016 HY4 hydrogen aircraft is based on the Taurus G4 .
