Georg Steinbacher (born September 18, 1910 in Berlin-Friedrichshagen ; † May 25, 1979 in Kissing near Augsburg ) was a German ornithologist and former director of the zoological gardens in Frankfurt and Augsburg.

Live and act

Georg Steinbacher was the son of the Berlin ornithologist Friedrich Steinbacher (1877–1938). Even in his school days, he was fascinated by the world of birds and animal gardening. After studying ornithology, he was initially a research assistant at the Berlin Zoological Garden . On April 1, 1938, he took over from Kurt Priemel as director of Frankfurt Zoo . Under Steinbacher's leadership, the zoo saw changes in bird keeping. He had plants and similar cage facilities removed so that zoo visitors had a better view of the birds. Despite his work as zoo director, Steinbacher was drafted into the Second World War, where he was seriously wounded. After he was released from the hospital on September 11, 1945, he officially resigned as zoo director. Bernhard Grzimek had already taken over the management of the zoo on May 1, 1945 . After his recovery, Steinbacher worked for a short time at the Cologne Zoo , before heading the Augsburg Zoo from August 1947 until his retirement in 1978 . In 1971 Steinbacher was appointed professor.

Steinbacher was a prominent author of popular scientific animal books, including functional-anatomical studies on bird feet with turning toes and back toes (1935), On the biology of the blackbird: (Turdus merula L.) (1953), With animals on you and you (1954), Knaurs Bird book: The house book for bird friends and bird lovers (1955), This is how animals (1955), Animals behind bars: Behind the scenes of our zoos (1955), Knaur's animal kingdom in colors: Birds (1959, with Ernest Thomas Gilliard ), Cage and Garden Birds (1960), North America (1966, with Ivan T. Sanderson and Margaret Auer ), Knaurs Tierreich in Farben: Mammals (1970, with Ivan T.
