Miguel Casares

Miguel Casares (* 1966 in Madrid ) is a Spanish veterinarian . He has been director of the Frankfurt Zoo since February 2018 .

Life

After studying veterinary medicine and completing his doctorate at the University of Zurich , Casares worked at a large number of zoological gardens and other institutions. One focus of his work was in Switzerland and Spain, where he helped set up the biopark in Valencia as zoological director. He was also involved in the development of the zoos in Benidorm and in Casablanca , Morocco . There the concepts of community keeping and the socialization of several animal species are pursued.

Casares has been the deputy director of Frankfurt Zoo since September 2016 and headed the zoo's scientific department, which also includes the zoo's curators and veterinary station. Since February 1, 2018, he has been the successor to Manfred Niekisch , who left office as director at the end of 2017. In an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau in the summer of 2017, he named education as one of the “four classic zoo pillars”, alongside research, nature conservation and recreation, as the most important task of a zoo : “Here, people should find out that animals are endangered and what can do it yourself - in an emotional way. "
